Michigan is among just a handful of states that has legalized the sale of online lottery games. The state’s iLotto operation went live in August 2014 and has since grown by leaps and bounds, today offering over 50 instant win games, Keno, and popular MI draw games such as PowerBall, Mega Millions, and Michigan Daily 3. It is unequivocally the most successful legal iLotto operation in the United States.

The online lottery is accessible to any Michigan resident over the age of 18. Learn more about the Michigan iLotto in the sections below, including how to sign up, what games are online, and how you can capitalize on the myriad promotional offers and promo codes available to new players.

The Michigan Lottery has come out strong with a variety of easily accessible offers for new signups. In order to take advantage, simply navigate to the Michigan Lottery main page, click “Register” and complete the relatively straightforward signup process.

We recommend that new players use the Michigan Lottery promo code MIBETS, as this will net them 50 free games of Instant Keno. There are absolutely no strings attached to this offer — all that’s required is for players to successfully register an account.

In addition, by clicking on one of the links on this page new players can claim a generous first-time deposit bonus. The offer is a 50% match up $100. In other words, players that deposit $200 will receive $100. The minimum eligible deposit for this bonus is $10.

There is no playthrough requirement associated with this offer. However, the bonus itself is not cashable, only the winnings. Liken it to a freeroll, where if you win you get to keep your earnings, and if you lose, the money was on the house anyhow.

In addition, new signups can use promo codes listed on the back of scratch-off tickets sold at any participating Michigan lottery retailer. Eligible games include:

    • Classic Black ($20)
    • $150,000,000 Payout ($30)
    • Diamond Dazzler ($20)
    • Golden Ticket ($10)
    • Millionaire’s Club ($30)
    • Gold Rush Series ($2, $5, $10)
    • Lucky 7’s Series ($2, $5, $10)
    • Hit Series ($2, $5, $10)

By spending as little as $2 at a retail outlet, players will win a promo code that will net them 10 free online plays plus a $10 Instant Game coupon that activates once they either deposit $10 into their account or complete a $10 draw game purchase.

Signing up for the Michigan Lottery

Registering a Michigan online lottery account is hardly a laborious process. Simply click “Register” to get the ball rolling.

Then, new players will be prompted to enter their email, a password and an eligible promo code (optional).

On the “Personal Information” page players will be asked to enter their:

    • Full name
    • Gender
    • Address
    • Date of birth
    • The last four digits of their social security number

The SSN check is necessary so that the MI state lottery can ensure player identities, and acts as a safeguard against malicious activity. Suffice it to say, the utmost precautions are taken to ensure that personal and financial information are protected. The same cannot be said about unregulated online lotteries.

Once the information is verified, players will be whisked away to the “Confirmation” page, after which they can begin playing lottery games online.

Remember, in order to play MI iLotto games players must not only be geolocated in the state of Michigan, but must be at least 18 years of age and residents of the state.

Advantages of playing online lottery games in Michigan

    • Convenience: In so long as they have a compatible playing device handy, Michigan residents can play lottery games from anywhere in the state, at any time. No more waiting in long lines to buy a Powerball ticket potentially worth hundreds of millions.
    • Game selection: There is simply more variety found online than there is at retail outlet stores. Choose from over 50 instant win games, four Keno games, and a variety of popular draw games such as Powerball and Mega Millions.
    • Flexibility: Online players can play the games they want at the price point they want. Fancy a game of Crossword but would rather not fork over $5 a game? Play an equivalent game online for just $0.10 a pop. Not to mention, online players won’t have to deal with the messy shavings that they do with physical scratch-offs. They’ll also be able to claim their winnings without having to visit a retail clerk.
    • Added value: Whether it be through online promotions, promo codes found on the back of physical scratch-offs, or straight up free cash, online players receive numerous opportunities to pad their bankrolls that simply aren’t available to those who purchase tickets exclusively from retail shops.

Game selection at MI online lottery

At present there are nearly 60 games that can be played online, broken out into three primary categories: instant win, draw, and Keno.

    Instant win

Instant win games combine the best aspects of retail scratch-off tickets and interactive video gameplay. They’re also the most prevalent game format found on the MI iLotto site, with more than 50 games available.

Players that select an instant win game are treated to dazzling user interfaces, riveting sound effects, myriad quality-of-life settings, and a variety of betting options.

The games themselves range from the familiar Egyptian Deluxe, where players that reveal a winning number win a prize, to the nuanced Ca$hBuster Extreme, which tasks players with revealing 5 or more adjacent blocks to win, and rewards six consecutive wins with a potentially lucrative bonus round.

Instant win players are encouraged to play at a pace that’s comfortable for them. Crave the excitement of “scratching” off one space at a time? No problem. By contrast, players that prefer to know how they fared quickly can simply click on the “Reveal All” feature (for most games).

Beyond this unparalleled level of flexibility, one of the main draws of online instant win games compared to their retail counterparts is the pricing. Players won’t have to fork out $2, $5, or even $20 per chance to win — instead, instant win games can be played for as little as a nickel per game.

For players that prefer to try before they buy, they’ll be pleased to know that all instant win games are available for both real-money and demo play.

    Popular games include:

    • Blackjack Doubler
    • King of Clubs
    • Queen of Diamonds
    • VIP Gold
    • Hit

    Draw

The Michigan lottery began offering its most popular draw games online in January 2016. Since, players have had the opportunity to win mammoth payouts all from the convenience of their home computer or mobile device.

    Games offered include:

    • Powerball
    • Mega Millions
    • Fantasy 5
    • Lotto 47

Both the Fantasy 5 and Lotto 47 games carry a price of just $1, while the Powerball and Mega Million tickets are $2. From the online interface, players can view a variety of statistics pertaining to these games including the next drawing date, past drawings, paytables, and the current estimated jackpot.

Powerball jackpots in particular can soar sky high, as they are available for purchase in 44 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. The largest recorded Powerball jackpot was on January 13, 2016, reaching a staggering $1.6 billion. Mega Millions is no slouch either, with jackpots climbing as high as $1 billion in 2021.

    Keno

The Michigan iLotto spreads four Keno games, with minimum purchase amounts ranging from just $0.10 – $0.25.

All four titles share some similarities:

    • Players select 10 numbers out of 80, either by hand-picking them or letting the computer decide.
    • 20 numbers are selected at random by the computer.
    • Payouts are determined by how many numbers are matched.

However, each game also carries its own nuances. For instance, Fuzzball Keno players will receive a small payout if they match zero numbers, while Instant Keno Multiplier players can have their winnings multiplied by as much as 10x.

Full list of online Keno games as follows:

    • Instant Keno Mulitplier
    • Fuzzball Keno
    • Bullseye Keno
    • Instant Keno

Players have the option to choose how many tickets they wish to play at once, the ticket cost, and the speed of play.

    Cashiering at Michigan online lottery

An online lottery site might as well be for show if there aren’t a variety of speedy and reliable ways to get funds on and offline. Luckily, when it comes to payment processing the Michigan iLotto makes the grade.

At present, there are five popular depositing options available:

    • Visa/MasterCard/Discover credit and debit card
    • PayPal
    • ACH
    • Neteller
    • Online Game Card

The Online Game Card allows players that prefer not to share their banking information, or who preference cash payments, an alternative option. To purchase a card simply visit any eligible Michigan lottery retail outlet, and either buy the card directly from the clerk or via a self-service lottery machine.

Redeeming a card is as easy as signing in, clicking “Deposit” in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, selecting “Online Game Card” as the preferred payment method, and entering the code found on the purchased card. Online Game Cards can be used for deposits from mobile devices as well.

Often, the MI iLotto will provide players with extra incentive to use Online Game Cards. For instance, a recent promotion awarded purchasers a chance to win a special 40% match up to $40 bonus.

Most deposit methods, with the exception of the Online Game Card and debit/credit cards, can also be used for withdrawals too. Generally speaking players will have had to first use a method for deposits before using the same method for withdrawals. Players may also request a paper check, although they will have to wait until the check hits their mailbox.

Also, withdrawing players may be asked to provide additional information or documentation (such as a scan of a government issued ID) before their request is processed. Once a document is uploaded, players won’t be asked to provide the same document again unless their personal information changes.

    A note on withdrawals

All wins up to $600 are immediately issued to player balances, and are immediately available for withdrawal.

For single wins of over $600 players will need to visit a Michigan Lottery Claim Center. There, they must provide a valid form of picture identification such as a driver’s license, military ID or passport. Proof of social security is also required.

Lucky players who win over $50,000 must submit an online claim and head down to the Michigan Lottery headquarters in Lansing.

Once claims have been settled, the winnings will appear in player accounts and be available for withdrawal.

    Michigan Lottery Responsible Gaming

Michigan online lottery players have a plethora of tools at their disposal to help them monitor their gambling habits:

    • Deposit limits: Players can set daily and weekly deposit limits, with decreases going into effect immediately, and increases subject to a 48 hour waiting period. By default, the weekly deposit limit is set at $500.
    • Self-exclusion: Problem gamblers can choose to bar themselves from playing MI online lottery games for a specified period of time. During self-exclusion they will not be able to log-in or reopen their account for any reason.
    • Play history: Players can keep track of the amount of time and money spent online via their personalized account history. This history provides a detailed account of wins, losses, deposits and withdrawals, as well as games played and individual wagers.

In addition to these tools, there is also a Responsible Gaming section on the MI state lottery’s main site, which provides tips for betting responsibly, dispels common gambling myths, and has sections on both problem gambling and underage gambling.

    Frequently asked questions

What platforms is the Michigan Lottery available for?

There are currently three primary ways to access Michigan Lottery games:

    • Browser-based: Play games directly from the MI Lottery’s secure web portal. The software is compatible with all popular browsers including Safari for Mac, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.
    • Optimized mobile: Lottery games can also be played from the lottery’s mobile website. Simply navigate to the site from any compatible smartphone or tablet to get playing.
    • Mobile app: A mobile version of the software is available for both iOS and Android powered devices. The mobile app comes with a few extra frills not found on the desktop software, including the ability to scan tickets. Currently, players will need at least iOS 10 or Android 5 to download the application.

How do I know my personal information is safe?

The same regulatory body that has governed the Michigan lottery since its inception in 1972 — the Michigan Bureau of State Lottery — provides oversight of the Michigan online lottery.

All iLotto registrants must be able to prove that the personal information they have entered is correct before they’ll be allowed to wager real-money. Verification is done via identity verification technology deemed appropriate by the bureau. In some cases, additional documentation may be requested. In order to ensure account security all players are asked to provide the last four digits of their social security number.

Upon registration, players must also pass an age verification check. The minimum eligible age to play lottery games in the state of Michigan is 18.

All accounts are password protected as a security measure.

Financial information is subject to the same level of scrutiny, with the aim of ensuring that player deposits are held securely and payout requests are freely available.

Can Michigan residents play while traveling out-of-state?

No. Players must be geolocated in the state of Michigan to play for real-money.

What are the returns on Lottery games?

For instant win games, the return-to-player averages out to around 87%. This is roughly on par with the returns on other popular online games.

Draw games like Powerball have variable returns that increase as the jackpot rises.

Any other promotions worth knowing about?

Once per day, registered players will receive a Daily Spin To Win. Prizes include in-store free play coupons, online bonuses, or entries into sweepstakes giveaways. Recent winners have received up to $1,000 in cash or $800 worth of instant tickets.

Other promotional vehicles include Online Game Card bonuses, giveaways awarding cash and luxury getaways, straight back bonuses, and much more. The promotional schedule is constantly being updated, so stay check in regularly for the latest.

How much revenue does the Michigan Lottery make?

The Michigan Lottery is growing at a blistering pace, and because of that the operator is able to run bigger and better promotions.

Due to a relatively subdued rollout, it took some time for the iLotto to get going. The introduction of the Online Game Card in December 2014 helped move the needle, and in 2015 iLottery sales generated a net win of $18.5 million.

Win spiked to $48 million in 2016, a figure which only includes revenue off instant win sales. Draw games were added online in January 2016.

2019 was the industry’s best year to date, with instant win revenue soaring to $116.3 million. For the year, online instant win tickets did $961.4 million in sales, accounting for approximately 32% of total lotto sales ($3.9 billion). It’s looking like iLottery games are trending upward in popularity in the Wolverine State.

    Where does the money go?

28 cents of every dollar spent on lottery sales goes to Michigan’s School Aid Fund. The Fund provides much needed aid to:

    • School districts
    • Higher education
    • School employee retirement systems

In 2017, the Michigan lottery raised approximately $924 million for schools, shattering the previous year’s contribution on $888.9 million. That number has continued to rise in recent history.

Only 3 cents out of every dollar spent on lottery is allocated for continued operations. The other 97 cents directly benefits the state.

Do online lottery sales negatively impact retail sales?

Based on the numbers, the answer appears to be no. Since the inception of the online lottery in 2014, total lottery sales have grown dramatically, breaking new records each and every year. In 2014, sales were $2.61 billion, spiking to $3.9 billion in 2019.

Granted, a hefty portion of this new revenue did originate online, but retail sales have climbed as well. If anything, online and retail are well-positioned to complement one another, as the Michigan lottery provides players with numerous incentives to visit retail outlets. Likewise, online promo codes found on the backs of physical scratch-off tickets drive players to the online site. Expect an even greater integration of live and online as the industry matures.

If that weren’t evidence enough, a study published in December 2016 by Digital Gaming Group Principal Digital Consultant Danny Bogus concludes that “retail channels have not been negatively affected since the launch of online sales. In fact, a better argument can be made in support of iLottery increasing overall player engagement and driving cross-channel sales.”

History of the Michigan online lottery

The September 2011 US Department of Justice legal opinion that the Wire Act only applied to sports betting paved the way for a legal online lottery in Michigan. However, it wouldn’t be until April 2013 that Gov. Rick Snyder would take up the cause. That month, Snyder submitted a proposal asking for $3.4 million in funding for the online lottery initiative, claiming that a full-fledged iLotto could generate nearly $500 million for state education over seven years.

Unfortunately, Snyder’s proposal fell largely on deaf ears. It was then that the Michigan Lottery took matters into its own hand, allocating a portion of its existing budget for online lottery sales, and thus negating the need for legislation to be passed.

With a vendor (Pollard Banknote) and game provider (NeoGames) on board, the iLotto was projected to launch in late 2014. And after a short soft launch beginning in August 2014 that’s exactly what it did, officially pulling the trigger in November 2014 with Keno and instant win games. The next month the Online Game Card was introduced, followed by a marketing ramp up in 2015.

Draw games like PowerBall and Mega Millions were introduced in January 2016, and today there are roughly 60 games available online.

    MI ONLINE LOTTERY VERDICT

    Bottom Line

With the MI online lottery there is no more need to go to a physical store to buy your Powerball, Mega Millions or Instant Win tickets, you can do so from the comfort of your own home online.
