Playing the lottery is a losing endeavor because there is no skill involved and over time you are certain to be in the hole, but two Michigan players won big recently and news of their win helps keep the fantasy alive for other players seeking a massive, life-changing payday.
According to the Michigan Lottery, the record-setting Lotto 47 drawing, a jackpot of $32.3 million, was won on Saturday by two players. The winning numbers were 04-16-33-38-40-44. The previous record jackpot for Lotto 47 of $23.6 million was set back in 2008.
The game’s jackpot had been growing since February.
In Michigan, the winners are allowed to remain anonymous.
Other forms of online gaming coming to MI soon
The record pot is partly attributable to the pandemic, as currently the only legal form of online gambling in the Wolverine State is the lottery. Either next month or in January, the Michigan Gaming Control Board, which regulates commercial casino gaming in the state, is expected to sign off on the launch of the state’s first regulated online casino and sports betting platforms.
Lotto 47 is available for play via the Michigan online lottery app or web portal, but the winners of Saturday’s drawing bought their tickets from a retail location.
The tickets were purchased at a wine store in Ferndale and a Shell gas station in Lake Odessa.
Lotto 47 Players select six numbers from 1 to 47 for a chance to win a jackpot starting at $1 million and growing until someone wins it. For an additional $1 per play, Double Play may be added to a Lotto 47 ticket, giving players a second chance to win up to $1.5 million in the nightly Double Play drawing. For another $1 add-on, players can add EZMatch to their ticket for a chance to win up to $500 instantly.
Double Play was implemented in January 2019, which helps explain the record-setting purse.
Lotto 47 drawings take place on Wednesday and Saturday at 7:29 p.m local time. Tickets can be purchased until 7:08 p.m. on the day of the drawing.
