Over the past two weeks, Michigan lottery players have made a series of stunning wins, racking up millions of dollars in cash and prizes through online promos, draw game jackpots and lucky scratch-off tickets.

What’s more, an out-of-state player made the score of several lifetimes by hitting the absolutely massive $533 million Mega Millions jackpot, the 10th largest lottery grand prize ever awarded.

$2 million nearly tossed in the trash

Otherwise known as scratch-offs, instant win games can be bought at thousands of retailers across the state or online, and are a fun way to try for a big win for the price of a few bucks. They also happen to make great last-minute gifts.

One Macomb County woman recently got the birthday present of a lifetime, when a ticket she was gifted by her husband turned out to be a $2 million winner. But the big score, which came on the $20 Multiplier Spectacular instant win game, almost never happened.

After scratching off all the numbers, the woman didn’t think that she had won anything at all and went to toss the ticket in the trash. Before she could, though, her husband grabbed it to take a second look – a very smart move. The split-second decision was a life-changing one, netting the couple a seven-figure payout.

They now plan to take the lump sum of $1.3 million, instead of 30 annual payments for the full amount, and will use part of the cash to pay for their children’s college tuition.

The episode just goes to show how easy it can be to overlook what could be a winning ticket. It also makes you wonder just how many big prizes have been tossed out never to be redeemed. To be on the safe side, be sure to take your tickets back to a retailer to have them officially scanned for any wins.

Online players will have no such problems, as wins are revealed instantly.

Shamrock Play Giveaway iLotto winner revealed

The Michigan lottery’s online branch recently chose the grand prize winner for its $20,000 Shamrock Play Giveaway promo, which ran during the month of March. Velisha Frank of Oakland County took home the top prize, while others walked away with hundreds of dollars in bonus credits which can be used to play other instant win games.

For a chance at taking home one of the prizes, players just needed to place a bet on one of three qualified games. For each game they played, they earned 10 entries into the drawing. By making a small deposit of at least $20, on top of placing a wager, they collected 500 additional tickets. Players were allowed to up their chances by accruing a maximum of 530 tickets per day.

While not everyone came out as lucky as Frank, 10 other players took home $100 in bonus credits, while an additional 10 took home $300 each in bonuses.

Mega Millions hits at over half-a-billion dollars

The stars aligned for one New Jersey lottery player, who reportedly won the eye-popping $533 million Mega Millions jackpot last Friday. Officials have traced back the sale of the winning ticket to a gas station in the Garden State, but the winner has not yet been revealed.

The jackpot is the 10th largest lottery payout of all time, and the fourth-largest prize awarded in Mega Millions history.

The game’s jackpot grows so large due to the fact that is connected throughout 44 states, including Michigan, along with other US territories. In fact, Wolverine State gamblers don’t even need to leave the house to take a shot at winning a massive Mega Millions prize – they can do so by simply purchasing their tickets online.

Unfortunately, the recent hit has caused the grand prize to revert back to its $40 million minimum. However, in a very short period of time the jackpot is already grown by an additional $5 million.

The game is just one of 10 draw options offered on the Michigan lottery website. Powerball, another popular multi-state game, is also available for online play, and currently offers a healthy $60 million prize.
